7:39 PM @samarabuelouf “Today, “Ihab” was present at the forefront of my speech at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia, Italy.
This is the least I can do for Ihab — to speak about his courage, his work, his perseverance, his injury, and his need for treatment amidst the ongoing war, the shortage of medical supplies, and the targeting of hospitals.
Right now, my only wish is for him to come back to life — for his familiar smile to return, for him to come back strong, just as we’ve always known him.
He was a sincere, loyal friend. I knew him as a man who stood tall in times of hardship, pain, and illness. We shared tears, laughter, meals, and sickness.
As I speak about the targeting of journalists, this is the least I can do for them — to remember them everywhere I can, where the world might hear me.
Journalistic coverage in this war has not been like anywhere else in the world.
I don’t want to lose any of them. I don’t want to lose them.
I don’t want their families to pay the price for their work in journalism.
I hope my dear friend Ihab recovers soon.”**
